What’s in a name?
Each of us is curious, prone to wander as we wonder, seeking experiences that satisfy our physical, emotional, and spiritual longings. It is this spirited search, and the questions encountered along the way, that shape our purpose and activities here at Red Clover Abbey.
Part of that shaping is our name, which is both symbolic and intentional. While some might understand clover to be a symbol of luck, we chose it for its religious symbolism. The clover’s three-leaf construction has been used as an emblem for the three-in-one God of the Bible: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So clover serves as a visual reminder of the Trinitarian God and the perfectly unified, loving relationship between each member. This God, and our relationship with Him, is central.
Next, red.
In the Christian tradition, the color red is often used to represent the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is our helper and advocate. A companion for our wanderings who guides us in the ways of grace and truth. So we’ve chosen red clover specifically to prompt us to remember that we are equipped and empowered by the Holy Spirit to live in ways that show our love for God and love for people.
And finally, abbey.
Abbeys are traditionally places of hospitality, offering respite and refreshment. A safe place to explore and imagine. To listen and be listened to. Our desire is that this place, and our posture, would be a welcoming presence and provide opportunities for a deeper connection to the heart of Jesus.
So we invite you to be part of the community that is Red Clover Abbey. Whether you connect online, in person, or just sample a few things on this site, we’re grateful that you’ve chosen to strive with us to humbly, honestly, and eagerly seek after the good and ancient paths. (Jeremiah 6:16a)
